Men's Championships 2019
A great turnout this year for the Club Champs and on the same weekend as The Open, it was set to be a cracking competition. Tricky conditions were found on the Saturday with strong winds making a tough start and par three's playing long. With many rounds in the 80's, only a handful found the 70's - defending Champ Craig Savage finishing with a 78 for the first day but a strong round from Jake Lee found a 72 to take the lead overnight. With the weather conditions becoming more favourable on Sunday, the course was reset in the morning with new pin positions for low scores.
Out in three's with the lead group making a final four, players were sent off with a bacon roll in hand and a clear course ahead. With a five shot lead proving to be a comfortable cushion for Jake Lee, the rest of the players were quickly storming ahead leaving the final four for dust to play catch up in their own match of champions. A quick pitstop from the bar buggy took the edge off a long wait at the 6th/7th holes where slow play had backed up the players. Early reports came in that it was a nice day but the golf was undesirable - good job refreshments were available!
With the final four still on the course battling it out for the top spot and their name on the board, the finished players feasted on some well deserved lunch and beverages in the sunshine, reflecting on the days events and a record number of Twos over the weekend (£3 each if anyone's asking!). Eventually, the final four made it back to the clubhouse where defending champ Craig Savage came in with an improved but not quite good enough 76 and saw Jake Lee take the win with another solid 72 gross. Second place to Simon Lee who had a 77 and 75 gross, with Craig taking third place overall.
Similar stories in the Net category saw some changes over the two days; Jake Lee leading (by countback) Joseph Benali, both with a Net 62 and Mark Brockway sitting in third and a Net 66, again leading on countback to Simon Lee and Philip Parish. Six Twos recorded for the first day by Troy Anderson on 5th, Mark Brockway on 7th, Ian Bosworth on 14th, Stuart White on 16th, Jake Lee and Craig Savage on 18th. Close scores to start the second day.
Sunday saw more low rounds from the top scorers with Joseph Benali taking the Championship with a 78 Net 61, followed by Jake Lee with two rounds of 62 and Simon Lee with a 66 and 64 just edging Mark Brockway out of a podium finish in fourth with a 66 and 65. More twos recorded for Sunday including Troy Anderson 5th, Joseph Benali 9th, David McCallum 14th, Craig Savage 14th, Martin Holmes 18th and Simon Lee 18th.
Congratulations to Jake Lee, Club Champion 2019 and Joseph Benali, Nett Champion 2019. Thanks to everyone for playing and we look forward to it all next year.
